21 Dec: Runner A comes clean [Top]
You may recall a news item from 1 December (Yet another rule breach...) where it was reported on this very page that two club members were seen cavorting in irregular club atire. Runner A has seen fit to respond:
Dear Webmaster,
I can assure you that I spoke to Joe King with reference to wearing club colours in a slightly different format than is usual. We discussed various options and whilst he said you must be "jesting" to my first outfit (too much thin Lycra), he agreed that as I would be running in the traditional red-white-blue then he could see no issue with my final choice. Joe was also pleased to find out that I am now semi retired and happily working at BourneSports in Stoke and thought that my sales experience and technical knowledge would be good for our club and local runners so we agreed that I could run in my outfit which had been custom made by my best and very much loved running partner (and wife) Julie.
I also mentioned that I had learnt a great tip for checking out the weather using your own trainers. Running shoes in these days are more and more technologically advanced. Its quite a simple thing to do: "Leave your shoes outside the window for a little while: if they are wet it's raining, if they are dry it's sunny, if you cannot see them it's foggy."
Yours sincerely
Runner A
Not sure about this Joe King fella but I hope he's paid his subs?

14 Dec: 'Tis the season to be jolly... [Top]
...as you don't have to race at Leek for another year!
The North Staffs Cross Country League concluded on Saturday in Leek with Newcastle runners to the fore in a number of age categories both on the day and for the series.
In the U11 Boys James Fradley was 2nd on the day to secure 1st place overall and helped Newcastle to win the team event, assisted by brother Adam (5th overall with two years still to go in the age group) and Jake Meir. Well done also to Caleb Hill and Ambrose Morris who competed in all 4 races.
The U11 Girls finished 2nd team overall with India Mellor 2nd overall. Sofie Goodfellow narrowly missed out on a medal finishing 4th overall with Chloe Lindop 9th, Laura Whitehurst 15th and Olivia Larsson 18th.

7 Dec: Your club needs YOU! [Top]
Last weeks cry for help ahead of the 2nd Birmingham League fixture met with a good response with the club fielding a team of 8 runners at Leamington Spa.

Thanks to those runners who were able to turn out at short notice and hope you enjoyed it so much that you want to run in the next one!

1 Dec: Yet another rule breach [Top]
Despite recent reminders via email and the website it has been brought to the club's attention that some of our members have yet again flouted the rule regarding the wearing of club vests in races.
At a recent road race (Cheddleton 10k) a number of runners were seen competing in non-regulation kit and we have been asked to show pictures of the offenders (who for legal reasons can only be referred to a Runner A and Runner B) to try and prevent this occuring again.
To see a picture of Runner A please click here.
And for a picture of Runner B click here.
This breach is more serious than usual in that the miscreants have also broken the Club Constitution, Rule 25.DEC, which clearly state that "Seasonal outfits may only be worn in events occurring between 1st December and 6th January inclusive".
If you know these runners then please approach with care as they may be carrying unauthorised mistletoe.

30 Nov: Your club needs YOU! [Top]
This Saturday (5th December) is the 2nd Birmingham League Cross Country race (Division 3) and we are short of runners - we need to field a minimum of six else we are disqualified from the league.
The distance is 10km and the standard is similar to the North Staffs Cross Country league.
If any senior men can spare a few hours this Saturday we would all be extremely grateful!
The race is in Leamington Spa and transport can be provided. The team will leave from Clayton at about 11.30am.
If you are able to run then please contact Craig Ashton (07745091670).
25 Nov: Cross Country League Rules [Top]
During this year's North Staffs Cross Country League there have been a few breaches of the rule regarding club membership.
The rules of this league (and the Birmingham League, Midland Ladies League, County Champs, etc) state that you can only compete for your 'first claim' club in the league, which is deemed as the first club you joined and which holds your England Athletics registration number.
So, for example, if an existing senior Newcastle runner joined another club 'second claim' in order to compete in a Track league, they would have to compete for Newcastle in the North Staffs Cross Country League.
Please note that none of our members have been involved but we've been asked to let our members know about the rule so as to avoid further breaches.
If you are a member of more than one club and are unsure as to which club you should be competing for please contact Rebecca Ibbs for clarification.
25 Nov: Stafford XC Champs entries [Top]
Entries are now being taken for the Staffordshire Cross Country Championships that will be held at Park Hall on Saturday 9th January 2010.

Please let your coach / team manager have your entry by 10th December to allow time for them to be collated and posted.

28 Oct: Good start in the Birmingham XC League [Top]
The men's team made an encouraging start to the Brimingham League on Saturday held over the infamous Sennelys Park course, featuring 6 crossings of a stream that has often caught out the most experienced of competitors.
The team finished in 4th place and with a similar turn out in the remaining fixtures stand a good chance of returning straight to Division 2 - just needs all those with long term injuries to stop feeling sorry for themselves and get back to training!
Mark Flint led the team home in a brilliant 4th place with Steve Ratcliffe also claiming a top 10 spot in 7th place.
Neil Gerrity took the place of the last and arguably most important counter in a solid 98th.
For once the men out did the women with only Michelle Buckle and Mel Young able to compete in the Midland Womens League.

19 Oct: Charli's Angels in at the deep end [Top]
Report from Charlie Weller:
Newcastle Ladies sent a team to the National Women's 4 stage Road Relays at Sutton Park last Saturday. We went knowing we were about the last qualifying place from the Midlands, so were a bit nervous about where we would be finishing! The array of club tents and incredibly fit-looking athletes from around the country did not help our expectations, but we put our brave heads on and did our Newcastle vests proud!!
(Thanks to Bryan Dale for the photo!)
We finished 46th out of 88 teams that started, and improved our Midlands team time by 9 seconds, clocking 1:09:15.
Michelle had to survive one of the roughest and most crowded starts ever....and proved she's getting back to her flying form with a super 16.49, handing over to Mel who had a really tough leg, but ran 18.30, knocking a fantastic 14 seconds off her Midland time. We were now 62nd and Charli managed 17.21 catching a few runners to drag us up to 52nd postition. Then it was all up to Jacqui, who flew round in a brilliant 16.35, powering through another 6 places to finish us in 46th!!
We'll be back next year we hope, and who knows...top 40 ??!!
Thanks to Charli for the report. Please email the webmaster if you'd like to post a race report.

8 Oct: Club vest reminder [Top]
At Saturday's Lyme Valley XC race, a small number of athletes competing did not wear club vests. Please be aware that if you take part in events such as the North Staffs Cross Country League, Birmingham League, County Champs, etc that you MUST wear your club vest.
Failure to do so can result in both you and the club being disqualified from the event, putting all your hard fought efforts to waste.
At the next fixture at Parkhall, athletes will be reminded of the need for club vests to be worn so if you don't own one then please purchase one or arrange to borrow one if new to the club to avoid any future embarrasment.

In the U11 Girls Laura Whitehurst narrowly missed a top 3 placing with series leader Ellie Jones unfortunately missing the last race.
In the U13 Girls Georgia Keates was the leading overall finisher in 12th place.

Paul Fradley was 3rd overall in the U13 Boys with Lewis Moore and Chris Whitehead also in the top 10.
In the U15 Boys Ben Brereton just missed a podium finish with 4th overall with brother Oliver two places back in 6th. Jon Whitehurst also achieved a top 10 finish.

Across the series some 48 junior athletes took part in one or more races - a brilliant turnout.

7th September: Andy Webster Memorial Run [Top]
This will be the second time we have held this run in memory of Andy and it will be an annual event. The run starts at 7pm from the club house and is 5km. The twist is that it is a 'limp-wristed' run. That means that you estimate how long it will take you and there is a prize for the male and female who gets closest to their estimated time. Easy you might say but you are not allowed to wear a watch! It will cost £1 to enter with all the money going to a Charity.
This event is open to all club members over the age of 14.

20 July: Washlands Relays report [Top]
Newcastle ladies went to defend their title at the Washlands Relays on Friday night but just missed bringing back the shield, finishing second to Hatton & Darts. Not bad for a team that's not quite firing on full cylinders at the moment....
Hatton & Darts led from Mel Young on the first leg by about a minute and quarter, then Michelle Buckle pulled Newcastle back into the lead. Despite a valiant effort Charli Weller couldn't hold on to the win but was rewared with the fatest O35 time for her efforts.
The B team also put in a good performance with a good start by Harrier Riley who then handed over to new recruit Gail Goodwin. The team were just pipped on the last lap for 3rd by Uttoxeter, despite Sarah Rhodes battling all the way round the last lap with a girl whose legs were twice the length of hers!

28 June: Newcastle Relays - report & results [Top]
This year's Relays got underway after a minute's silence held in memory of local legend Roy 'The Fox' Fowler who sadly passed away earlier in the day.
It was a fitting tribute that the winners of this year's relays were Roy's club, Staffordshire Moorlands, whose 'Green' team scorched to victory in 19.27 with all four runners breaking the 5 minute barrier.
Second team were City of Stoke A in 20.13 closely followed by City of Stoke E in 20.20.
Fastest individual was Kyle Fowler in a very quick 4.40 and also taking the scalp of the inform Ben Gamble (4.43) with Newcastle's Jamie Pringle having an encouraging run finishing neck and neck with Ben in the same time.
The first ladies team to finish was Trentham with all four members recording the top four times, with Jayne Dickens the quickest around the course in 5.38.
A very young City of Stoke team were a good 2nd and Newcastle ladies 3rd, with the welcome return of Michelle Buckle.
Winners of the 'Mixed' category were Boalloy, leading home 'Mixed Bag' and 'Team Cope'.
In the U15 Boys City of Stoke B were first back in 21.17 ahead of Newcastle Juniors 6 and Boalloy B. Dave Sheldon run the fastest leg in 5.07 with Newcastle's Ben Brereton running a respectable 5.18 for second fastest.
Last but not least, the U15 Girls was an all Newcastle affair with Newcastle Juniors 3 the first back in 25.19. Fastest leg was Molly Patrick in 5.55.
Well done and many thanks to all the teams who took part and the volunteers who helped set up the course, marshal, etc, etc.
We hope you enjoyed it and will hopefully see you all again next year!

18 June: Shugborough Relays [Top]
There was a great turn out of club members once again at last night's relays with 7 junior teams and a fair number of senior/vets teams competing in the relays.
A very wet day fortunately turned into a cool but dry evening and despite a few muddy patches the course stood up well.
Pick of the teams were U12 Boys who managed to secure 1st place.
After the race a number of hardy souls braved the cool evening for post race refuelling (sausage and chips) at the Holly Bush in Salt. Even with the patio heaters it was cold, let me tell you!
On a separate note, Charlotte Dale and Paul Fradley won their 1500m races in the Stoke School finals at Northwood and have qualified for the County finals - well done to both of them.

Over 20 runners from the club took part in the 25th Stafford Half Marathon run over a slightly revised route to cater for the record entry in lovely (if a little too warm!) conditions.

In recent weeks a number of runners have turned up at Ashfields just before 6.30pm to find the training group already off down the road.
Could all runners please be aware that the official meeting time is 6.30pm and runs will now commence at 6.35pm prompt.
Hopefully this will prevent runners being left on their own and having to play catch up.
Thank you. The Committee.
10 Mar: Use of the track - please read! [Top]
The Committee has been made aware of a number of incidents over recent weeks that have compromised both the safety of club members using the track and the track itself.
Could all club members please familiarise themselves with the track rules and adhere to them when using the facility. Please click here to view a copy. Awareness of other users of the track is essential and when the good light returns it is anticipated that over 60 members will be training on it on Tuesday and Thursday evenings.
In addition during recent adverse weather conditions a number of senior members were asked not to use the track to avoid an already difficult surface from being churned up any further but continued with their session. In the future the senior coaches (Malcolm Hackney, Simon Fradley, Vic Bevington and Julia Borthwick) will close the track if it is deemed unsuitable for use during periods of bad weather and request all athletes to train elsewhere e.g. Lymedale Business Park.
Thank you. The Committee.

16th Feb: Newcastle's fate sealed at Northbrook [Top]
Nine runners made to trip to Northbrook for the final fixture of Birmingham Cross Country League, which also marked our final appearance in Division 2 for at least another season.
Despite the best turnout and best performance of the season, with five club members managing top 100 placings, Newcastle remained rock bottom of the division in 18th place and will be competing in Division 3 next season alongside Trentham and Stafford Harriers.
To add to the tale of woe, Saturday's race also marked the final appearance in a cross country race for the club of Jan Pichl who, following his move to a new job in Oldham, will be moving onto pastures new but will retain second claim membership. Thanks to Jan for his committment (and entertainment!) over the last few seasons and we wish him well.
Well done and thank you to all who were prepared to turn out for the club at this and all previous fixtures and some pride can be taken in managing to complete the league, something that hasn't happened in previous years when relegation was imminent. The improved standings in the last two races will hopefully provide a solid base for next year and enable the club to fight for promotion back to Division 2.
Finally, congratulations must also be given to City of Stoke who comfortably won the division and promotion back to Division 1.

12th Feb: Mike and Mike share the mic. on Radio Stoke! [Top]
The BBC Radio Stoke Breakfast Show interviewed Mike Smith and Mike Griffiths on yesterday morning's show to discuss the Stafford Half Marathon, which is celebrating its 25th anniversary this year, and running in general.
Mike Smith ran in the first running of the race in 1984 and Mike Griffiths was last year's winner. Pete Morgan, the show's presenter, is clearly not a fan of the sport!
You can listen to their wise words by clicking here and fast forward to about 8 minutes. They're on just after the travel news!

1st Feb: Alsager 5 [Top]
Some 40 members bravely donned their club vests and turned out at the Alsager 5 on Sunday morning in very cold and windy conditions (at least it was dry!).
First for the men was the ever consistent Mark Flint in 71st, with Julia Myatt, Mel Young, Charli Weller and Becky Austin all finishing in the top 50 ladies and securing 5th team overall.
Julia, Charli and Becky also lead Newcastle to a brilliant 1st place in the Ladies Vets team event.
The men's team finished in 21st place and the Vet men in 9th.

29th Jan: Level 2 Officials Course [Top]
There is a level 2 officials course organised for Sunday 29th March at Alexander Stadium in Birmingham.
This is open to anyone who would like to train to become an official for Track and Field either as a timekeeper, track judge or field judge. (You don't need any prior knowledge or experience).
Unfortunately there is a decreasing number of officials in athletics and this could create problems in future years when we attend Track and Field meetings. The club particularly urges parents of our junior athletes to attend this course because we need you to help out at their Track and Field meetings later this year. Officials earn points for the team as well as the athletes.
Please note that the club will pay for you to attend the course.
Please email Rebecca or the course organiser Pat Lockley (01902 784903) for more details.
If you would like to attend the course then download an application form and send it to Pat Lockley:

27th Jan: Regional Sportshall final [Top]
Sunday 25th January saw our under 11's in action at Coventry representing Staffordshire in the regional Sportshall final. Staffordshire Under 11 Girls achieved a very deserved 2nd place, with Laura Whitehurst representing the club. Our Under 11 boys were out in force with Callum White, Chris Whitehurst and James Fradley in the Staffordshire squad and achieving 5th overall.
Sunday 1st February sees our U13 and U15 athletes representing Staffordshire in Worcester for the regional Sportshall finals. Good luck to those involved!
26th Jan: Midland XC Championships Results [Top]
A number of athletes made the trip over to Mansfield on Saturday for the Midland XC Championships.
Newcastle's younger athletes found the going tough compared to the local league with Paul Fradley the pick of the U13 Boys in 95th. Hannah Jones was the club's only representative in the U15s Girls finishing 96th, whilst in the U17 Girls Amy Whitehust and Laura Matthews finished 67th and 69th respectively.
Rebecca Ibbs was the sole finisher for the Senior Ladies team, finishing in 109th and the Senior Men were the only team from the club to complete a team, finishing 12th overall.
Top finisher was Jan Pichl in 66th ably supported by Steve Ratcliffe, Tim Fortyman, Martin Bailey, Robbs Ibbs, Ian Sparks and Nigel Symms.

20th Jan: Birmingham XC League Results [Top]
In what has been a tough year for the senior men's team, a good turnout at Sphinx was rewarded with an improved performance in the penultimate Birmingham XC League race.
Despite the team finishing a respectable 10th on the day, Newcastle remain firmly rooted to the bottom of Division 2, some 300 points from saftey with just one fixture to go and relegation to Division 3 a near certainty.
Top 50 placings were achieved by Jan Pichl in 24th and Steve Ratcliffe in 38th.
Full results for the club members who took part can be found here: Full results
The final fixture takes place at Northbrook on 14th February and Team Manager Ian Sparks is hoping for a good turnout to ensure the club completes all four fixtures - a couple of teams didn't field complete teams in the final fixture last year so you just never know!
12th Jan: Staffs County XC Champs Results [Top]
Well done to everybody who made the trip down to Sandwell Valley on Saturday to compete in the County Championships.
There were some good individual performances with top 10 finishes from Molly Patrick (5th) and Charlotte Dale (8th) in the U13 Girls and Matt Lockyear (9th) in the Senior Men (welcome back!), which will hopefully see some club members gaining county honours when the teams are announced.
The club managed to complete a number of teams across the age groups but team results were not available at the time of writing.

13th December: North Staffs Cross Country League [Top]
Another season of the NSCCL concluded at a wet and muddy Leek (is there any other kind) with the youngsters of the club leading the way.
Congratulations to U11's James Fradley and Ellie Jones who both came 2nd on the day to cement their top 3 placings overall in the league, with Ellie finishing joint 3rd and James 1st overall.
In the same age group good overall performances were also made by Adam Fradley (9th) and Chris Whitehurst (10th). The boys and girls teams also did well to finish 2nd and 3rd overall.
Surpassing the U11's achievements were the U13 girls who won the overall team event with Molly Patrick, Charlotte Dale, Bethany Wilson and Chloe Patrick 2nd, 4th, 5th and 6th overall - brilliant!
Although unable to finish a team, Paul Fradley achieved 5th place overall in the U13's with Jonathon Whitehurst also completing each fixture, as did Amy Whitehurst in the U17 girls finishing 4th overall.
No senior lady managed to compete in every individual fixture this year but the team finished a sound 4th overall. On the day Jaqui Slack was the best performer in 6th place.
The ladies team featured a number of new faces during the season (and the welcome return of more familiar ones) which augers well for next season.
The senior men, suffering from the loss of regular team members to illness, injury and pastures new, managed to complete the season as 7th team overall, with only Martin Bailey (17th overall) and Nigel Symms (8th M40) completing the four fixtures. Mark Flint put in a good performance to finish 10th on the day.
Thank you to everybody who competed in all fixtures throughout the season (sorry we can't mention you all) and those who supported our hardy runners too, including the coaches!
Although the North Staffs XC League is now complete remember we're still only half way through the cross country season!
11th December: Christmas Party [Top]
Once again a great night out was had by all at the Newcastle (Staffs) AC Christmas Party, held at the Stop Inn - given how my head felt on Friday morning I was beginning to wonder if I should've done the same...
A big thanks to Ken for organising the evening.
For more details see the Christmas Party page!
